Innovation Story
Amcor and Unilever create new recyclable packaging for dishwasher tablets
New packaging innovations are in great demand to improve the sustainability of everyday products. At the same time, consumers want the convenience of online shopping without compromising on their sustainability principles.
Building on its commitment to ensure 100% of its plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, Unilever has worked with Amcor to develop a packaging solution for some of its leading home care brands that is both more sustainable and ecommerce ready. Together, they have developed new recyclable Polyethylene (PE) pouches for Unilever’s dishwasher tablets - the Sun All-in-1 brand distributed in Belgium, Finland, Netherlands and Portugal, and the Svelto brand distributed in Italy. The new PE pouch is recyclable in the PE and polyolefin recycling stream for flexible packaging available in several countries, and can be used for a wide range of home and personal care products.
With the ecommerce journey in mind, the new pouch’s structure was specially engineered and put through Amcor’s Ecommerce Laboratory against the ISTA 6A standards, a certified test developed by ISTA and Amazon to simulate the ecommerce supply chain, to ensure the products will arrive at their destination in optimal condition.
