One step closer to the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive

When you last read our newsletter in July, the Commission was working in full speed on the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) to be able to adopt its proposal by the end of 2021. Although the Commission is still working hard on the review and the Impact Assessment study is still expected to be concluded in the autumn, the Commission proposal is no longer expected by the end of the year but rather in spring 2022.

WHAT DID YOU MISS?

June 2021: Eunomia (consultants working on behalf of DG Environment) organised a series of webinars on the key intervention areas of the PPWD review, i.e. waste prevention, recyclability, reuse, recycled content, enforcement & hazardousness and compostability. These webinars were the opportunity for Eunomia to present the different policy measures that are being considered for the Directive’s review.

WHAT'S NEXT?

  • November 2021: Final impact assessment study
  • November – December 2021: Review of the Impact assessment study by the Commission’s Regulatory Scrutiny Board
  • Q1-Q2 2022: Publication of the legislative proposal (date to be confirmed)
