EUROPEN’s Single Market Start-up Award is back with its 4th Edition!

EUROPEN is pleased to announce the launch of the 4th edition of the Single Market Start-up Award, organised in partnership with JA Europe as part of GEN-E 2026. The award celebrates university startups that harness the opportunities of the European Single Market to grow and scale across borders.

The initiative recognises innovative student entrepreneurs who are building businesses with a strong European dimension. By encouraging startups to expand beyond their home markets, the award highlights the importance of the Single Market in enabling companies to access new customers, partnerships, and opportunities across the EU.

Startups participating in the competition are evaluated across four key areas:

  1. Impact: To what extent does the start-up demonstrate a clear understanding of the opportunities created by the EU Single Market (e.g. free movement of goods, services, capital and people, regulatory harmonisation, digital market access), and how has it leveraged — or how does it plan to leverage — these to operate or expand across more than one EU Member State?
  2. Sustainability: To what extent is the start-up’s business model environmentally sustainable? Does it integrate environmentally responsible practices into its product design, operations, and growth strategy, and can this approach be effectively scaled across multiple EU Member States within the framework of common EU environmental standards?
  3. Innovation: How innovative is the solution, and how does the start-up leverage – or plan to leverage - EU-wide networks, funding instruments, partnerships, or market access to accelerate innovation and scale across Member States?
  4. Future development: How clear, realistic, and strategically grounded are the start-up’s plans for expansion within the EU, including target Member States, timelines, market entry strategy, regulatory preparation, partnerships, and funding plans?

Over the past editions, the award has recognised outstanding student startups from Greece, the Netherlands, and Georgia. Winners were invited to the official GEN-E award ceremonies held in Istanbul, Catania, and Athens, and also visited Brussels to meet business leaders and policymakers and learn more about the European policy and business landscape.

This year, EUROPEN looks forward to meeting the shortlisted candidates on 20 May. The winning team will be welcomed in Brussels in June, before joining the GEN-E 2026 event in Riga this July, where Europe’s most promising student entrepreneurs will come together to showcase their ideas and ambitions.

Through the Single Market Start-up Award, EUROPEN continues to support the next generation of entrepreneurs who are building innovative, sustainable businesses and making full use of the opportunities offered by the European Single Market.
